Lions Hearing Conservation Society
of District 20-Y2
(Covering the Greater Capital District area to Utica)
– Grady Aronstamm and Sandra Clark
The Lions Hearing Conservation Society of District
20-Y2 has programs concerned with prevention, early detection, correction,
education, research, advocacy of rights and accessibility. One of its programs
is establishing and maintaining Assistive Device Lending Libraries within
their district. The Society has eight assistive device centers. Each approved
center provides equipment for loan, free of charge. The average loan-out
period is two weeks. This allows deaf and hard of hearing people an opportunity
to experiment with new technology or borrow similar products while theirs
are being repaired.
There are four main categories of devices:
-
Alerting and safety devices such as door bells, fire alarms,
telephone ringers and alarm clocks;
-
Amplified telephones, Voice Carry Over telephones and telecommunication
devices for the deaf (TTY);
-
Television listening systems which provide personal amplification;
-
Listening systems which provide amplification for small groups,
meetings, theaters and houses of worship.
There is a wide range of devices available at each site.
For example, a wireless, portable amplification system that transmits up
to 300 feet, to something as simple as a "whistle stop" that prevents hearing
aid feedback while using the telephone. For further information, contact
one of the Lending Libraries listed below: (V-Voice / T-TTY)
