National Hearing Screening
– Sally Wilson
New York State Chair, NHS
The calendar turnover from 1999 to 2000 and the one that moved us from 2000 into 2001 didn’t really bother me; I even dated my January checks with the right year – well, most of them anyway. It doesn’t feel like it now, early in the year, but I’ll definitely be writing 2002 on my checks by October.

So what’s with October, you say? I’m glad you asked. October is the SHHH National Month of Hearing Screening for 2002 and you have the option to schedule hearing screening whenever and wherever you wish and to tie up with other organizations that provide hearing screening, like the Lions, the League for the Hard of Hearing and your local hospitals and health service organization – anywhere you can spread the word about SHHH and anytime you can hand out SHHH publications to people who need to know.

All of this is free – for the people who are screened and for the audiologists – no charge to audiologists for SHHH materials and space on the Web site. So start thinking about those places where people get together – houses of worship, workplaces, your local government offices, colleges as well as malls and libraries and, hey, there’s no limit to the places you can set up information tables in October – football games, neighbor-hood yard/garage sales, fire houses where they have Halloween parades.

It’s going to be better this year.
